Pune: Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad reeled under severe waterlogging on Friday night after a torrential downpour inundated several key areas. Localities such as Hinjawadi, Bhosari, Shivajinagar, Kothrud, Viman Nagar, and Punawale were among the worst affected, with residents and commuters seen navigating flooded streets, leading to major disruptions in daily life.
In response to the intensifying southwest monsoon, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued orange and red alerts across several districts of Maharashtra. The orange alert warns of heavy rainfall over the next 24 hours in Pune, Mumbai, Palghar, and the ghat regions of Satara and Kolhapur.
This year, the southwest monsoon made an unusually early arrival on the Indian mainland, hitting Kerala on May 24 — a full week ahead of the typical June 1 onset. This marked the earliest monsoon arrival since 2009.
May 2025 has already gone down as the wettest May in India since 1901, recording an average rainfall of 126.7 mm. The early onset of the monsoon triggered persistent rain in southern and eastern regions, significantly contributing to the historic rainfall.
Although the monsoon’s progress stalled briefly after May 29, weather officials report that it resumed activity starting Thursday, bringing much-needed rain to central and western parts of the country.
