Pune: Heavy and continuous rainfall over the past 24 hours has led to severe flooding in Alandi and its surrounding areas, just ahead of the ceremonial departure of the revered Sant Dnyaneshwar Mauli’s Palkhi procession. The persistent downpour has caused the Indrayani River to swell dangerously, resulting in a swift and forceful current that has submerged several low-lying regions.

Key landmarks, including the riverfront temples, the police reception area, and the women’s changing rooms, have been inundated. The iconic Sopan Bridge, a crucial link for local residents and devotees, has gone completely underwater, disrupting daily life and pilgrimage preparations.

In response to the worsening situation, local authorities have declared the riverbank off-limits to all devotees. A significant police presence has been deployed to ensure public safety, while rescue teams remain on high alert. Two boats have been stationed in the riverbed to handle potential emergencies. The river is also carrying large quantities of aquatic vegetation downstream, further complicating the scenario.

Despite these challenges, the unwavering devotion of the Warkaris remains evident. Pilgrims arriving in Alandi have sought shelter from the rain wherever possible, but their spirit and enthusiasm remain intact. With cymbals, drums, and continuous chants of “Harinam,” the Warkaris continue to pour into the holy town, eager for a glimpse of Mauli and to participate in the centuries-old tradition.
The palkhi procession of Sant Dnyaneshwar Maharaj is scheduled to commence its journey to Pandharpur on Thursday, June 19. The event draws millions of devotees from across India every year, and this year is no exception—despite the inclement weather.

Authorities are urging all attendees to exercise caution and adhere to safety advisories as the region braces for continued rainfall. Yet, amidst the floodwaters and logistical challenges, the devotion and resilience of the Warkari community continue to shine as a testament to their deep spiritual faith.
