Pune: As dengue cases begin to rise with the onset of the monsoon, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has taken action to regulate the cost of dengue tests in private hospitals and laboratories. The health department has issued strict warnings against overcharging, emphasizing that no facility is permitted to exceed the government-fixed rate of ₹600 per test. Violations will result in penalties.

This move comes in response to several complaints from residents about exorbitant fees being charged for dengue testing. PMC’s health chief, Dr. Nina Borade, has formally notified private medical establishments to strictly follow the pricing regulations and to ensure timely reporting of all suspected dengue and other mosquito-borne illnesses.

All private health facilities have been instructed to regularly update the PMC on suspected cases, allowing for prompt tracking and intervention. The civic body aims to prevent outbreaks by maintaining close surveillance, especially during the monsoon season when mosquito breeding intensifies.

So far in June, Pune has reported 36 suspected cases of dengue, though none have been confirmed as positive. Overall in 2025, 166 suspected cases have been recorded, with eight cases testing positive. Additionally, eight chikungunya cases have also been documented.

Currently, free dengue testing is available only at the municipal hospital in Gadikhana. However, the PMC plans to expand this service to Kamla Nehru Hospital, where testing equipment has already been installed. The facility is expected to become operational soon, enhancing accessibility for residents.

In a bid to control mosquito populations, the PMC has issued notices to residents found responsible for maintaining mosquito breeding grounds. Since January, 807 notices have been issued and ₹96,300 has been collected in fines. Authorities are ramping up inspections and awareness campaigns to ensure cleaner surroundings and reduce the risk of mosquito-borne diseases.

The municipal corporation continues to urge citizens to cooperate in maintaining hygiene and promptly report any symptoms of dengue or chikungunya to medical professionals.
