Pune: With a rising number of fatal accidents on local roads, Pune District Collector Jitendra Dudi has instructed officials to take swift action to enhance road safety across the district. Speaking at a meeting of the District Road Safety Committee held at the Collectorate, Dudi called for urgent steps to raise public awareness about dangerous “black spots” that are highly prone to accidents.

The meeting was attended by key officials from the Public Works Department, including Superintendent Engineer Bappa Bahir and Executive Engineer Milind Barbhaai, along with Regional Transport Officer Archana Gaikwad. Representatives from the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), Pune Police, RTO, Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC), and the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) also participated.

Dudi highlighted that a total of 42 black spots have been identified across Pune district — 15 within PMC limits, 22 under NHAI, 2 under MSRDC, 1 under the Maharashtra State Infrastructure Development Corporation, and 2 under the Public Works Department. Authorities were urged to put both short- and long-term safety measures into place at these locations. Proposed actions included restricting access during peak hours, installing warning signs, clearing debris, and setting up protective barriers. Police and transport officials were instructed to inspect these safety measures and submit a compliance report within a month.

He also called for a thorough analysis of the causes behind last year’s accidents, with a view to recommending concrete preventive solutions. Dudi directed all departments to fully cooperate to ensure the data can help improve safety across the district. Additionally, he instructed the deployment of traffic police at Khadakwasla Dam Chowk to ease congestion and approved the allocation of funds for public awareness initiatives on road safety.
Earlier in the meeting, Bahir gave a computer-based presentation outlining the work already completed under the District Road Safety Committee.
