Pune: The Maharashtra government has finally approved the long-awaited proposal to incorporate Hinjawadi into the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC), promising to resolve persistent civic problems that have plagued the IT hub for years.
At present, Hinjawadi’s administration is fragmented across various agencies — including MIDC, PMRDA, gram panchayats, and the PWD — resulting in poor coordination and delayed infrastructure development. Despite its status as a prominent IT destination, the area continues to struggle with basic amenities like proper roads, water supply, and effective waste management.
First put forward in 2015, the plan to merge Hinjawadi and surrounding villages like Marunji, Maan, Nere, Sangawade, Jambhe, and Gahunje into PCMC had been awaiting approval at the state level for nearly a decade. With the green light now given, the process of bringing these areas under PCMC jurisdiction is expected to commence shortly.
To highlight the urgent need for integration, IT professionals and local residents had initiated the “Unclog Hinjawadi” campaign, gathering over 16,000 signatures to advocate for the merger. The petition will soon be submitted to the Chief Minister.
Still, some local stakeholders have voiced concerns. Farmers fear unfair land compensation, while others worry about losing autonomy over local decisions and potential delays after the inclusion. Concerns about PCMC land reservation policies also persist. Despite this, many residents and IT employees are optimistic that unified administration will enhance governance and improve public infrastructure.
