Pune: A shocking incident has emerged where a police constable was brutally assaulted by a gang of drunken men after he confronted them for causing a disturbance on the street late at night.
When the injured officer attempted to file a complaint at Chaturshringi Police Station, senior officials allegedly delayed registering the case due to political pressure. The matter was eventually brought to the attention of Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar, who intervened, leading to the registration of the case after three days. Following this, the Chaturshringi Police arrested four suspects.
The complaint was lodged by Police Constable Chandrakant Jadhav (42, resident of Ramoshiwadi). Based on his statement, police arrested Rupesh Manjrekar (25), Aniket Rajesh Chavan (21), Aniket Ghodke (24), and Abhi Dongre (24), all residents of Ramoshiwadi, Vadgaonwadi.
Constable Jadhav, posted at Sahakarnagar Police Station, was returning home from work on Thursday night when he noticed the accused creating a commotion under the influence of alcohol near Ratna Hospital on Senapati Bapat Road. When Jadhav confronted them about their behavior, the gang began verbally abusing him.
The situation quickly escalated when the accused dragged Jadhav into a rickshaw and brutally assaulted him. The gang repeatedly punched and kicked him on his head, face, and chest. One of the attackers even attempted to hit him on the forehead with a stone, but Jadhav managed to dodge some blows. Despite suffering injuries, he eventually managed to escape from the rickshaw.
Jadhav attempted to document the attackers by capturing photos on his mobile phone, but the gang forcibly snatched his phone and fled the scene on their two-wheelers. Shortly after, Jadhav’s brother and friends arrived to assist him, and they proceeded to Chaturshringi Police Station to file a complaint.
However, officers at the station allegedly told him to return the next day and directed him to Sassoon Hospital for medical examination.
When Jadhav returned the next day to officially file his complaint, police officials allegedly delayed taking action, making him wait for several hours. Even though he provided CCTV footage as evidence, officers reportedly told him that, due to the ongoing ‘Tarang’ police program, media reporters might question the issue, so his complaint should be filed at a later time. Furthermore, a local political leader allegedly pressured Jadhav to drop the case.
Frustrated by the delay, Jadhav escalated the matter to senior officers, eventually reaching Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar. Upon being informed, Commissioner Kumar reprimanded the officers responsible for delaying the case. Following his intervention, the police swiftly registered the case and arrested the four accused.
The suspects were presented before the court, which remanded them to police custody.
The incident has sparked concerns among Pune residents, with many questioning the delayed police response. Citizens are now asking, “If a police officer faces such hurdles in seeking justice, what can ordinary people expect?”
Authorities have assured that strict action will be taken against those responsible for delaying the case, and measures will be implemented to ensure such incidents do not happen again.
