Pune: In a shocking case revealing potential security lapses at the Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru Industrial Centre in Yerwada, a 17-year-old boy in juvenile custody was reportedly attacked and almost strangled by five fellow detainees. The incident unfolded around 9:15 a.m. on June 10 in Block No. 2 of the facility.

The violent episode is said to have been triggered by the victim’s refusal to clean a bathroom, which allegedly enraged the other juveniles. In response, the five accused reportedly assaulted the victim and attempted to strangle him using a makeshift rope fashioned from a torn towel.

Fortunately, a security guard arrived in time to intervene and prevent a fatal outcome. Authorities have registered a case of attempted murder against the five juveniles involved. Assistant Police Inspector Vishal Takale is leading the investigation.

Police Inspector Ravindra Shelke of the Yerwada police station confirmed the ongoing probe into the incident and stated, “The investigation is focused on uncovering the sequence of events that led to this assault. The victim’s family has been notified. Charges have been filed under Sections 109, 115(2), 352, 351(2), and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.”

The Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru Industrial Centre is a reformative institution for minors involved in criminal cases. This incident has raised serious concerns about internal monitoring, safety measures, and supervision at such correctional facilities.
