Mumbai: Stand-up comedian Kunal Kamra, who allegedly attempted to incite tensions in Maharashtra while being in Puducherry, has been summoned once again by Mumbai Police. The police have also refused to grant him an extension.

Kamra had performed a song mocking Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde during his comedy show, which led to a police complaint being filed against him. Mumbai Police had earlier summoned him for questioning, but he failed to appear. Now, the police have issued a second summons, denying any additional time for his response.

Kunal Kamra was initially issued a summons to appear for questioning on Tuesday at 11 AM, but he did not comply. The controversy erupted after he created a song titled “Thane Ka Rickshawala,” where he allegedly referred to Eknath Shinde as a “traitor.” Following this, a significant uproar ensued. The studio in the hotel where Kamra performed his show was also vandalized. Police have filed cases against Shiv Sena (Shinde faction) workers in connection with the vandalism.

A case was registered against Kunal Kamra based on a complaint filed by MLA Murji Patel. He has been charged under various sections, including Section 353(1)(b), 353(2), and 356(2) of the IPC for defamation. The first complaint was lodged at the MIDC police station, later transferred as a Zero FIR to the Khar police station. Kamra had requested more time for the investigation through his lawyer, but Mumbai Police rejected his plea. The police have also summoned Habitat Studio and other individuals associated with the show for questioning.

In response, Kamra issued a statement asserting that he is willing to cooperate with the police and legal proceedings. However, he also demanded that action be taken against those responsible for vandalizing the hotel. “The law should be equal for everyone. If a joke led to vandalism, then those who attacked the venue should also face legal action. How did these individuals enter Habitat with hammers without any prior notice?” Kamra questioned.

Despite claiming his willingness to cooperate, Kunal Kamra has not yet appeared for questioning, prompting Mumbai Police to issue a second summons.
