Pimpri-Chinchwad: The Cyber Cell of Pimpri-Chinchwad Police has made significant strides in combating online financial fraud over the past one and a half years. With the arrest of 135 accused involved in cybercrimes, the police have successfully solved 90 percent of the cases reported during this period, delivering a major setback to cybercriminal networks operating in the city.

Pimpri-Chinchwad, known as one of Maharashtra’s fastest-growing IT hubs, attracts a large workforce from the tech industry and houses numerous international companies and startups. Cybercriminals have increasingly exploited this environment, following trends seen in Mumbai and Pune, to target residents with a variety of scams. These include share market investment frauds, phishing through WhatsApp links, quick money schemes, and scams under the guise of customs violations. These activities have caused financial losses worth crores of rupees to citizens.

The robust action by the Pimpri-Chinchwad Police Cyber Cell has not only led to the arrest of cybercriminals connected to cases filed at various police stations, including Nigdi, Wakad, Hinjawadi, Sangvi, Dighi, and the Cyber Police Station itself, but has also contributed to a notable reduction in cybercrime rates within the city. Additionally, the police have successfully recovered and returned money to many victims.

Police officials emphasize the importance of public vigilance to avoid falling prey to cyber fraud. Despite repeated awareness campaigns, many individuals still unknowingly share sensitive information over phone calls or click on suspicious links, making them vulnerable. Victims often report the crime only after suffering significant financial loss. Authorities urge citizens to exercise caution and immediately report any suspicious activity.
The Cyber Cell’s efforts extend beyond the city limits, with a successful investigation of a cybercrime case in Karjat, showcasing their growing expertise and reach.

With the rise in online banking and digital transactions, cybercriminals continue to exploit unsuspecting victims through elaborate schemes involving promises of high returns, intimidation with legal and customs-related threats, and other deceptive tactics. The establishment of the dedicated Cyber Police Station under the Pimpri-Chinchwad Police Commissionerate has been instrumental in addressing these challenges.

Police Commissioner Vinaykumar Chaubey stated, “While we will continue to take strict action against cyber offenders, it is equally important for citizens to remain cautious and engage only in secure and verified financial dealings.”
