Pune : A plea seeking the cancellation of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s bail has been filed by Satyaki Savarkar, the grandson of freedom fighter Vinayak Damodar Savarkar, in the Pune MP-MLA Special Court. The demand comes amid allegations that Gandhi has repeatedly avoided responding to the chargesheet filed in a defamation case related to his controversial statements about Savarkar.
According to the plea submitted by Satyaki Savarkar’s counsel, Advocate Sangram Kolhatkar, Rahul Gandhi has failed to respond to the court’s charges despite several hearing dates, and this constitutes grounds for cancellation of his bail.
The case dates back to Gandhi’s remarks that allegedly defamed Savarkar, prompting Satyaki Savarkar to file a defamation suit in the MP-MLA court. As part of the case, Savarkar had submitted copies of Savarkar’s book “Majhi Janmathep” (My Life Sentence), related newspaper clippings, and a pen drive as evidence.
Rahul Gandhi’s lawyer, Advocate Milind Pawar, had earlier filed a request asking that these documents—particularly the book “Majhi Janmathep”—be handed over to the defence in English. On Friday, Kolhatkar handed over Marathi versions of “Majhi Janmathep” and another book titled “Hindutva” to the defence. However, the English copy of “Majhi Janmathep” is still pending, and the defence has reiterated their request for the same.
The court has now scheduled the next hearing for May 28, where it is expected to decide on the bail cancellation plea and address the pending document requests.
This legal action has added to the political tension between the ruling BJP and the Congress, especially over historical narratives and ideological divides. The outcome of this case could have further implications for Rahul Gandhi amid his ongoing legal and political challenges.
