Pune: In a significant move towards tech-driven public safety, Pune Police will be implementing Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools to manage the immense crowds expected during the annual Ashadhi Wari pilgrimage. This spiritual journey, which involves the revered palkhi processions of Sant Tukaram Maharaj from Dehu and Sant Dnyaneshwar Maharaj from Alandi en route to Pandharpur, draws lakhs of devotees every year.
As part of the preparations, Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar, Joint Commissioner Ranjankumar Sharma, Additional Commissioner Manoj Patil, and other senior officials conducted inspections along key procession routes. AI-enabled surveillance cameras will be deployed at critical junctures, including Vishrantwadi, Shivajinagar, and Dive Ghat. These systems will assist in real-time counting of devotees and monitoring of vehicular flow, allowing for efficient crowd control and swift response to any issues.
According to Additional Commissioner of Police Manoj Patil, who heads the traffic division, AI will play a dual role. “Beyond managing congestion and streamlining the movement of palkhis, AI technology will help detect potential security risks and prevent untoward incidents, ensuring the pilgrimage remains peaceful and secure,” he stated.
Deputy Commissioner of Police Sandeep Bhajibhakare, tasked with coordinating security for the event, said that AI-generated data will aid in logistics and help improve planning for future events. “Knowing the real-time footfall and vehicle movement enables better resource deployment and decision-making,” he noted.
To maintain order and safety, police are also putting in place traditional measures such as traffic diversions, barricading, and access restrictions in high-risk areas. However, the integration of AI adds a new layer of intelligence to these efforts, allowing for quicker detection and resolution of any emerging concerns.
With attendance expected to be in the lakhs, this AI-led initiative is being hailed as a timely and progressive step. It not only promises to enhance the safety and convenience of pilgrims but also sets a model for handling large-scale events using modern technology. The Pune police’s forward-thinking approach could pave the way for similar implementations at major events across Maharashtra and beyond.
