Pune: A heated controversy unfolded at an English-medium school in Nigdi when a Class X student was denied entry to her exam for wearing a burqa. The situation escalated when her parents approached the police for assistance, eventually leading to mediation by the Nigdi police. Following the intervention, the girl was permitted to appear for the exam.
The incident took place on the morning of Saturday, March 1, when the student from Bijlinagar in Chinchwad arrived at the exam centre. However, she was denied entry as the school officials insisted her face needed to be visible for identity verification, a requirement for exam entry. Her parents immediately contacted the police, and after discussions with the Nigdi police, the school allowed her to take the exam.
However, the matter did not end there. According to the parents, the school administration stated that the student would not be allowed to attend the upcoming exam scheduled for Monday, March 3, if she wore a burqa. The parents expressed strong opposition to this, claiming that no rules from the Maharashtra State Board prohibit wearing a burqa during exams. They warned that if the school continues to block her entry, they would seek support from the community.
.
The situation remains unresolved, with tensions running high as the student prepares for Monday’s exam.
