Pune: City continues to grapple with severe traffic congestion and rule violations, ranging from bikers neglecting to wear helmets to frequent red-light jumping. The city’s traffic woes remain a significant concern for both residents and authorities.
Recently, a Pune resident posted a dashcam video on X, highlighting several vehicles running a red light at Wagholi. The video, showing blatant disregard for traffic signals, was captioned: “Another fresh example of today’s blatant violation of traffic rules in Pune. Just a few hours ago at BJS Wagholi. No one stopped at the signal…” The resident tagged the Pune Commissioner of Police and the traffic department in the post, underscoring the need for action.
This video followed a previous viral clip, which depicted a biker—who wasn’t wearing a helmet—crashing into a car. The biker was seen checking his phone while attempting a right turn from the extreme left lane, further highlighting the dangers of distracted driving.
In an attempt to alleviate the congestion, the Pune Traffic Police has implemented new measures along Ahmednagar Road, specifically between Kharadi and Wagholi. Traffic signals have been removed at key points to enable smoother vehicle flow. These changes are currently being tested in areas like Shastrinagar, Wadgaon Sheri, Viman Nagar (near Phoenix Mall), and Kharadi Dargah.
Pune Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar recently met with local officials and community representatives to discuss these adjustments, which are being rolled out as part of a pilot project.
Despite these efforts, the city continues to face challenges with reckless driving and traffic violations. Authorities are urging citizens to comply with traffic regulations to ensure safer roads and ease congestion in the city.
