Pimpri Chinchwad: Top officials at the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) are reportedly using air-conditioned offices in violation of government regulations, contributing to a significant rise in electricity expenses for the civic body. An internal audit has revealed that this unauthorized usage is inconsistent with existing pay scale rules and has cost the corporation several lakhs of rupees.
According to guidelines issued under the Seventh Pay Commission, only officials drawing salaries within the S-30 pay scale—between ₹1,44,200 and ₹2,18,200 per month—are entitled to air-conditioning in their workplaces. This policy was further reinforced by a government resolution issued on May 25, 2022. Despite these stipulations, none of the current senior officials at PCMC fall within the eligible pay bracket.
Nevertheless, air-conditioners remain in use in the offices of the municipal commissioner, additional commissioners, city and chief engineers, deputy and assistant commissioners, and other department heads. The audit findings suggest a widespread disregard for established norms, raising concerns about transparency, accountability, and prudent use of public funds.
A civic advocacy group has filed a formal complaint, highlighting the mismanagement and alleged misuse of taxpayer money for the comfort of ineligible officials. The complaint is backed by information obtained through the Right to Information (RTI)
