Pune: The long-awaited Pune Ring Road project has officially moved into the construction phase, as the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) initiates groundwork after completing the tender allocation process. The project, aimed at decongesting traffic in Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad, has been awarded to nine contractors and is expected to be completed in two and a half years.

Spanning approximately 172 kilometers with a planned width of 110 meters, the ring road is one of the largest infrastructure initiatives in Maharashtra, with a projected cost of ₹42,711 crore. To facilitate execution, the road has been divided into eastern and western corridors.

MSRDC officials report that land acquisition is almost fully completed — 99% for the western segment and 98% for the eastern. The project received final approval from the state cabinet shortly before the election code of conduct was implemented, allowing work to proceed without delay.

The eastern corridor is segmented into seven phases, while the western stretch consists of five. Construction activities are already in progress in major areas including Wadebolhai, Khadakwasla, Sinhagad, Mulshi, Urse, Chakan, Hinjawadi, and Soratwadi.

“We’ve issued work orders to nine contracting firms under government directives, with a strict completion timeline of two and a half years,” an MSRDC representative stated. Early construction efforts are concentrated on terrain levelling and foundational work like bridge and embankment building in preparation for the monsoon season. Other phases are expected to progress concurrently.
To ensure timely execution, the agency has warned that any delays from the contractors will result in monetary penalties and liabilities as per government norms.

For the eastern ring road section, approximately 1,054 hectares of land — including private holdings, government land, and forest areas — have been secured. On the western side, around 693 hectares have been acquired. Only about six hectares remain pending, and MSRDC officials have confirmed that steps are being taken to complete the acquisition shortly.

This massive infrastructure project is expected to transform Pune’s transportation landscape and provide long-term relief from growing urban congestion.
