Pune: In light of rising water levels due to relentless rainfall, the Maharashtra Water Resources Department began releasing 2,000 cusecs of water from the Khadakwasla Dam into the Mutha River starting at 1:00 PM today. This precautionary release has triggered flood warnings in several low-lying zones under the jurisdiction of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC).

PMC Additional Commissioner Prithviraj B.P. confirmed that all Municipal Assistant Commissioners have been directed to alert local residents and take necessary safety measures. He noted that PMC teams are currently deployed to handle waterlogging in vulnerable localities.

Shweta Kurhade, Control Officer at the Central Flood Control Room of the Khadakwasla Irrigation Division, explained that the discharge is a preemptive step in response to consistent inflow into the reservoir from upstream catchment areas.

Authorities have urged residents living near the riverbanks to relocate livestock and secure personal belongings. Areas under immediate surveillance include Sinhagad Road, Mhatre Bridge, Deccan, Shivane, and Erandwane—locations known to face overflow risks during dam releases.
Emergency Coordination in Place

The Flood Control Room has activated a formal alert and is closely coordinating with the following agencies:

Pune District Collectorate – Disaster Response Unit

Pune Municipal Corporation – Disaster Management Cell

Office of the Divisional Commissioner

Pune Police Commissioner’s Office

PMRDA Headquarters

MSEDCL Central Control Room, Rasta Peth

All departments are on standby and have been instructed to maintain a state of readiness for any emergencies.

Residents are strongly advised to follow official updates regarding water discharge levels, weather forecasts, and safety advisories.
