Pune: Public anger has flared after Yogi Niranjan Nath, a trustee of the Alandi Devasthan Trust, was accused of disrespecting Warkaris, journalists, and police officers at the Vitthal-Rukmini temple premises in Alandi. Footage of the incident, which recently surfaced on social media, triggered widespread criticism of his conduct during one of the most sacred pilgrimage traditions in Maharashtra.

Eyewitnesses report that Niranjan Nath spoke harshly to Warkaris gathered at the temple, rebuked members of the press, and argued with police personnel present at the site. Following public backlash, he offered an apology. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has also responded to the controversy.

Warkari leaders condemned the trustee’s behavior as an insult to their cherished tradition of humility and devotion. Many have called on the temple administration to hold him accountable, stressing that such conduct taints the spirit of service that lies at the heart of the pilgrimage.

“When those meant to serve God act as if they are above others, they fail to grasp the true essence of the Dnyaneshwari,” one Warkari leader remarked, echoing sentiments shared across the community.

A spokesperson for the Alandi Devasthan Trust acknowledged the incident and stated, “We apologise for any distress caused. Our tradition is built on humility and devotion. Steps have been taken internally to address this issue, and we will hold further discussions to ensure that such behavior is never repeated.” The trust further noted that while they can offer recommendations, formal action against Niranjan Nath must follow proper administrative protocols.

Members of the media also expressed disappointment and called on temple authorities to safeguard their rights to report on these important events, hoping the focus will return to celebrating the Warkari tradition with the respect it deserves.
