Pune: In a significant development for Pune’s growing aviation needs, the Indian Air Force (IAF) is slated to transfer 13 acres of land to Pune Airport by late August or September this year. The move is expected to play a crucial role in easing the increasing pressure on the airport’s infrastructure due to rising air traffic.

Airport officials have confirmed the expected timeline and revealed that the newly acquired land will primarily be used to construct additional aircraft parking bays. This development is essential to manage the surge in flight operations. As part of a mutual agreement, the airport authority is building office spaces for the IAF on an alternative plot—nearly 95% of which has already been completed.

Following the land handover, a detailed master plan will be created to ensure the optimal use of the space. Initial plans include building five new aircraft bays and three remote parking bays, all aimed at minimizing delays caused by limited aircraft parking capacity. Authorities anticipate these new bays could be operational by the end of 2025 or early 2026, depending on the pace of construction.

Pune Airport has recently seen a remarkable uptick in activity, including a record 212 flight movements in a single day. The IAF has expanded commercial flight slots to 235, of which 207 are actively in use—underscoring the growing demand for air travel in the region.

Upgrades and Passenger Experience Enhancements Underway
Alongside airside developments, renovation work is also progressing at the old terminal building. The arrival section is being redesigned into a modern departure area featuring 14 new check-in counters, which are expected to be completed by December. This upgrade aims to streamline passenger movement and reduce congestion during peak hours.

Additionally, a newly opened airside food court has improved the amenities available to travelers, enhancing the overall passenger experience before boarding.

Aviation analysts have applauded the expansion efforts, noting that timely completion of infrastructure projects is vital for the airport to maintain smooth operations and meet the demands of a rapidly growing city.
