Pune: District Collector Jitendra Dudi has issued an official order allowing extended use of loudspeakers and sound amplification systems for specific festivals and special events throughout 2025. This move, authorized under the Central Government’s Noise Pollution (Regulation and Control) Amendment Rules, 2017, permits the use of sound systems beyond the usual limits for up to 15 days in the year, with extended hours from 6 am to midnight.

While this directive has been welcomed by cultural and religious groups, it has sparked mixed reactions from citizens. Some residents have expressed concern about the impact of prolonged loudspeaker use on local peace and tranquillity, fearing it could lead to disturbances in residential areas.

Key Guidelines and Exemptions

The order mandates that noise levels remain within permissible limits for the specific zoning areas. However, it clearly excludes areas designated as silence zones, such as hospitals, educational institutions, and courts. These areas will continue to be protected from excessive noise. Compliance with noise regulations will be monitored by local authorities, including the police and administrative bodies.

Authorities have stressed the need for a balance between cultural expression and noise control laws. To ensure compliance, monitoring teams will be deployed to check decibel levels during the specified events. Any public complaints regarding excessive noise will be addressed promptly by local administration.

Permitted Festivals and Special Events

The exemption will apply to the following events in 2025:

Shiv Jayanti: Wednesday, February 19
Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Jayanti: Monday, April 14
Maharashtra Day: Thursday, May 1
Ganapati Utsav, Eid-e-Milad, and Anant Chaturdashi: Monday, September 1 to Saturday, September 6
Navratri Utsav: Wednesday, October 1, and Thursday, October 2
Christmas: Thursday, December 25
Year-End Celebrations: Wednesday, December 31

Additionally, the order allows for two extra days for other important events within the district as needed. The relaxation is part of a growing effort to accommodate cultural and religious celebrations while ensuring that noise pollution does not disrupt peace in sensitive areas. Local authorities have urged citizens to cooperate and follow the established guidelines to maintain harmony within the community.
