Pune: Recently, multiple incidents of vehicles catching fire during the summer months have gained attention, particularly those involving electric vehicles. One such incident occurred at Dhayari, DSK Chowk in Pune, where an electric two-wheeler suddenly caught fire. Thankfully, the fire brigade responded swiftly, controlled the blaze, and no casualties were reported.

To help prevent such incidents, here are some important safety guidelines for vehicle owners:

Regular Inspections: Frequently check for oil leaks, damaged wiring, loose battery connections, and any signs of overheating.

Cooling System Maintenance: Ensure that your vehicle’s cooling system is working efficiently.

Keep Your Vehicle Clean: Remove any dry leaves, paper, or other flammable debris from the engine compartment and exhaust areas.

Battery Care (Especially for EVs): Monitor your battery’s temperature and charging habits. Always use chargers recommended by the manufacturer.

Park Smartly: Avoid parking in direct sunlight for extended periods, particularly when the engine is still hot or after charging.

Carry a Fire Extinguisher: Having a compact, vehicle-approved fire extinguisher can help manage small fires before they escalate.

Immediate Action on Warning Signs: If you notice smoke, a burning smell, or unusual sounds, pull over safely, switch off the engine, and exit the vehicle without delay.

Contact Emergency Services Promptly: Call the fire department or police right away if a fire breaks out.

What to Avoid:
Ignoring Warning Signs: Don’t disregard strange smells, smoke, or overheating alerts.

Overcharging Electric Vehicles: Avoid charging your EV overnight in hot weather or using unauthorized cables.

Smoking Near the Vehicle: Stay away from smoking close to fuel tanks, batteries, or charging ports.

Storing Flammable Items: Items like lighters, aerosols, power banks, and pressurized cans can be dangerous in high heat.

Using Water on EV Fires: Water can react adversely with electric vehicle battery fires, making the situation worse.

Retrieving Belongings During a Fire: Prioritize your safety—never try to recover items from a burning vehicle.

Parking on Flammable Surfaces: Avoid parking over dry grass or leaves where hot exhausts could ignite a fire.

By following these precautions, vehicle owners can significantly reduce the risk of fire incidents, especially during the hot summer months.
