Pune: In a significant move towards inclusivity, the Central Railway has pledged to improve accessibility at Pune station for persons with disabilities. This initiative comes after a meeting led by Rajesh Kumar Verma, District Railway Manager, Pune, where social activist Rafique Latif Khan, the newly appointed nominee from Prahar Apang Kranti Sanstha, raised concerns about the daily challenges faced by disabled passengers.

Khan highlighted several key issues affecting accessibility at the station, particularly the lack of dedicated parking spaces near the entrance for specially designed vehicles. He emphasized that this shortage adds significant difficulties for those with mobility challenges. In response, railway authorities assured that a designated parking area would be created near the main entrance, making it easier for disabled passengers to access platforms via Battery Operated Cars (BOC).

Another pressing issue was the absence of ramps for wheelchair users. Khan stressed that without ramps, wheelchair-bound passengers face immense difficulties navigating platforms. The authorities have committed to evaluating the situation and incorporating passenger feedback to address this issue.

A further major concern raised was the need for lifts on all platforms. Many individuals with disabilities struggle to use the existing foot overbridges, and lifts are seen as a necessity rather than a luxury. In response, the Central Railway has approved the installation of four lifts at Pune station. Two lifts are already in place—one on Platform No. 1 and another near the Tadiwala Roadside foot overbridge—while two more will soon be installed on Platforms No. 2/3 and 4/5.

Khan emphasized the importance of these improvements in ensuring safer and more convenient travel for all disabled passengers, including seniors. He explained, “The creation of a dedicated parking area and the provision of battery-operated cars will ease daily struggles, while the new lifts will reduce dependence on others, enabling more independent travel.”

While the changes have been welcomed, Khan urged the authorities to swiftly implement the promised upgrades to make railway travel more inclusive and accessible for everyone.
