Pune: A pivotal meeting took place at the Pune District Collectorate, led by Women’s Commission Chairperson Rupali Chakankar and District Collector Jitendra Dudi, with the participation of key officials from PMPML, MSRTC, the police, and the municipal corporation. The meeting focused on implementing measures to improve the safety and infrastructure of Pune’s bus stations.

One of the major decisions from the meeting was the scrapping of buses currently out of service by April 15. This initiative aims to streamline bus operations and create more space for functioning vehicles. Additionally, a proposal was made to upgrade the Hirkani Cell, a dedicated space ensuring the safety of women at bus stations.

A significant part of the discussion was centered around enhancing women’s safety. It was proposed to set up a dedicated inquiry and security help desk for women at bus stations. In a further move to improve security, the number of pink auto-rickshaws for female passengers will be increased, and separate parking spaces will be designated for buses, ensuring more organized operations. Only essential buses will be permitted to stop in the bus station area.

To bolster surveillance, plans were made to install CCTV cameras at all bus stations and onboard buses. The emergency toll-free number, 112, will be prominently displayed at bus stations, ensuring passengers have quick access to emergency contact information. Additionally, there will be a public awareness campaign in schools and colleges promoting the toll-free child protection number, 1098.

The meeting also emphasized increasing security patrols. Beat Marshals and Damini Teams will be deployed more frequently to ensure enhanced vigilance and provide a safer environment for all bus station users, particularly women. These initiatives aim to significantly improve the safety and operational efficiency of Pune’s bus stations.
