Pune: As pre-monsoon showers begin to drench parts of Maharashtra and full-fledged monsoon activity approaches, the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) has issued a strong advisory, emphasizing the importance of electrical safety during the rainy season.

To ensure prompt assistance, MSEDCL has activated round-the-clock helplines for consumers to report electricity-related issues. Residents can reach out through toll-free numbers 1912, 1800-212-3435, and 1800-233-3435. Complaints can also be registered online at www.mahadiscom.in or via the company’s mobile application.

Highlighting the danger of water as a conductor of electricity, MSEDCL cautions the public to avoid contact with electrical installations such as streetlight poles, feeder boxes, transformers, and iron railings. Moisture-influenced contact with these setups can lead to severe electrical hazards. Similarly, residents are advised against touching electrical appliances that may be exposed to dampness.

Frequent monsoon occurrences like falling tree branches, bending poles, and broken power lines pose significant threats. MSEDCL warns that these fallen wires may still carry current and should never be handled under any circumstances. Additionally, the public should refrain from tying pets to electric poles or parking vehicles against them.

For household safety, residents are urged to keep electrical appliances and switchboards dry. MSEDCL also recommends the use of aluminium alloy wires instead of copper for fuse connections, to ensure swift disconnection during faults. Avoiding the use of irons on wet clothes and switching off unused appliances are further safety measures to consider.

Housing societies are encouraged to conduct inspections of streetlight wiring and earthing systems through certified electrical contractors. Buildings with metal staircases or tin roofs must ensure their electrical grounding is in proper condition. Hidden risks like electricity seeping through damp walls due to worn insulation can cause serious accidents if overlooked.

Furthermore, as many properties have electric meters located on the ground floor, property managers are advised to keep a close watch on water accumulation in these areas. In flood-prone localities, MSEDCL may temporarily cut off power to prevent accidents, and early alerts from citizens can help avoid larger issues.

MSEDCL reiterates its commitment to public safety and urges all citizens to follow the guidelines to stay safe this monsoon.
