Pune: The Building Development Department of Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), has issued a stern directive to halt residential activities in unauthorized constructions across the Ambegaon region. The move comes in compliance with the Supreme Court’s directives in Civil Appeal Nos. 14604/2014 and 14605/2024, which mandate the immediate discontinuation of all government services, permits, and licenses related to such illegal structures.

As per PMC’s official findings, several buildings in the area have encroached upon setback zones, terraces, and other restricted spaces. Despite prior warnings, these structures continue to be used for residential purposes in violation of construction norms.

The Supreme Court’s ruling explicitly prohibits the provision of any government facilities—including water, electricity, sanitation, and emergency services—to unauthorized buildings. In accordance with this, the PMC has instructed all relevant departments, including water supply, sewage management, electricity, fire services, health, and tax departments, to withdraw support without delay.

Additionally, the matter has been communicated to the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Division 4, to ensure coordinated enforcement.

Key properties identified in the crackdown include several notable constructions in the Ambegaon area. These include buildings associated with Sani Shinde in Amrit City on Jambhulwadi Road and Shivshruthi in Ambegaon Khurd; Raja Thakur’s property, also located in Amrit City on Jambhulwadi Road, Ambegaon Khurd; and Vishal Dhankwade’s Vedant Hotel on Ambegaon Nanhe Road in Ambegaon Budruk.

Meanwhile, social activist Arif Sheikh has raised serious concerns over the delay in enforcement by PMC officials. He accused the Building Department, particularly officer Praveen Bhavsar, of negligence, alleging that such inaction has led to large-scale exploitation of unsuspecting homebuyers. Sheikh urged for accountability and stringent measures against those responsible, emphasizing that unchecked illegal constructions are harming the interests of ordinary citizens.
