Pune: Tensions escalated at Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) as students from the Department of Sociology staged a protest outside the office of their Head of Department, Dr. Shruti Tambe, demanding her immediate resignation.
The students have alleged that Dr. Tambe subjected them to continuous mental harassment and engaged in caste-based discrimination. The allegations, which have been simmering for weeks, were formally raised in a written complaint submitted to the Vice-Chancellor nearly a month and a half ago. However, students claim that no action has been taken so far, prompting them to take their agitation directly to the department.
Frustrated by the lack of response from university authorities, the students began their sit-in protest outside Dr. Tambe’s cabin, calling for swift action and reiterating their demand for her resignation. They emphasized the need for a safe and inclusive academic environment and expressed disappointment over the administration’s inaction.
As of now, university officials have yet to issue a formal response regarding the allegations or the ongoing protest. The situation continues to draw attention from the wider academic community, with many watching closely for the administration’s next steps.
